| Intel V8 Octa-Core System, Full Performance Tests ![]() In the April time frame, details of Intel's dual-socket 8-core system dubbed "V8" became available but only preliminary performance numbers were shown. The platform consists of quad-core Xeon processors in an Intel 5000X chipset-based motherboard, along with FBDIMM (Fully Buffered DIMM) serial memory. A follow-on article at HotHardWare goes into significantly more detail on the platform and showcases many more performance metrics on a Windows Vista 64-bit installation. The POV-Ray and Cinebench 95 benchmark numbers alone are something to smile about. 'Intel's V8 isn't about promoting a platform as much as it is a show of strength and a glimpse of things to come. What V8 and QuadFX show is that both Intel and AMD are on a path to offering true, enthusiast-class, dual-socket platforms. And that's a good thing. Perhaps AMD is a little further down the path thanks to a more tweaker-friendly motherboard in the QuadFX-compatible Asus L1N64-SLI WS, but until consumers have more motherboards to choose from and perhaps quad-core processors from AMD, we can't very well declare that the time for QuadFX has arrived. One motherboard does not a platform make.' | |||

| SiN-X Admin Sins: 2,320 Xations: 9% ![]() | I know very little about this stuff but I remember something Sinny told me when dual core first was coming out. The programs you use have t support it becuase you actually see the performance. | |

| Iron Knight Sins: 569 Xations: 12% ![]() | ya, you can have a million cores, but if your OS or program, can only read one or two, that is all it usesso its useless, I persoinaly think they should slow down on the Cores, and work on make the current ones better. i got a quad core system ,and one is used, and the others only add up to 5% more performance Tops. unless I got a program that can use all 4 or even two. its a over kill right now. Hardware seems to beatting Software in the CPU industry, where its the opposite for Graphics, Software is outdoing Hardware. almost got to wait for a good video card for some of the games now, like UT4 but intell already did a 80 core system, and well its kool it has 80 cores, its almost useless ubless you got the programs that can use them. :edit: Hsoolien or Sinny will get ir first, all i need is RAM for my system, 2 dual Optrons do everythign i need to do. | |

| Paradox Sins: 3,847 Xations: 14% ![]() | the reason the industry is so focused on mult-core GIR is sort of two-fold 1.) because convential consumer level cooling is good enough (or quiet enough for consumers) to allow for faster speeds. Current tech bascially say 4ghz tops with fan based cooling. (about, course many facotrs, form factor of the chip, type of chip since PowerPC can run 40% faster using the same cooling) The second (and I know you have seen this) is because most consumer comps are loaded down with multiple (crap ) apps, something that multi core systems are better with at the same dollar valueProblems with muticore: Still only one bank of RAM that is slower then core speed, in other words still a bottle neck Ditto on HD's. there is a type of SAT I belive that is intended for muticore systems because of the random way they access, but still slower then drive acces times on single core systems Not enough proccesor intensive apps are threaded yet (threading allows an app to run on more then one core, thus faster) For me muticore would be useful whrn I'm running a UTserver and client as well as the UDE, and Ued. | |

| SiN's Lil Slave Sins: 2,117 Xations: 20% ![]() | I'm surprised at the lach of software that still doesn't support dual-core. Especially from the big name companies. Hsoolien you know they would oversell this to people who couldn't even use it. There's enough computers out there that are really overpriced and loaded with another crap of software then people would actually use or want to use. They would do the same to people. Tell them to buy this processor but you'll never see the performance becuase of what we already added to the computer. Although would be good if people took the 20min to understand how to load windows fresh and just have the things on there you need or want. | |

| Paradox Sins: 3,847 Xations: 14% ![]() | I have found the misinformed consumer is more likely to try to haev the most current tech, cause it's the most current thus must be the best. My father is bad for that | |
