Burglar swipes urine samples from corrections office

Someone broke into the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Probation and Parole office and stole at least six urine samples from a locked refrigerator, authorities said Wednesday.

The samples were part of the state's supervision program in which probation and parole agents, as part of holding offenders accountable, can require random urine samples, said John Dipko, corrections department spokesman.

Samples are often taken in the office, Dipko said.

Once samples are tested for the presence of alcohol or controlled substances, the results show whether offenders have been complying with the rules of their court-imposed supervision, Dipko explained.

Agents will review the cases for which urine samples are missing and will order new ones taken as necessary, Dipko said. He said he did not know if the six samples stolen were all of those being stored in the office at 1900 Pewaukee Road.

Entry was made sometime Monday night or early Tuesday morning, said Waukesha police Capt. Mike Babe. Authorities were called to the office at 7:19 a.m. Tuesday when a door was discovered to be broken and the urine samples were found to be missing, Babe said.

The Department of Corrections is conducting an internal investigation, Dipko said. Nothing else appears to have been stolen from the office, he said.
