Windows 7 Will Be Free For a Year

Microsoft is effectively giving away Windows 7 free for a year with the launch of the Release Candidate.

The Release Candidate is now available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and will go on unlimited, general release on 5 May.

The software will not expire until 1 June 2010, giving testers more than a year's free access to Windows 7.

"It's available to as many people who see fit to use it, although we wouldn't recommend it to just your average user," John Curran, director of the Windows Client Group told PC Pro. "We'd very strongly encourage anyone on the beta to move to the Release Candidate."

However, Microsoft has previously urged the millions of beta testers to start from scratch, and not simply upgrade the beta, in a bid to replicate the real-world experience of installing Windows 7. Those who are determined not to undergo a fresh install have to follow a workaround published on the Engineering Windows 7 blog.

The Release Candidate includes all the features that will be available in the final version. "The Release Candidate is the near-finished product," Curran said. "It's now just final regression testing and performance enhancements."

Microsoft refused to be drawn on the final release date of Windows 7, sticking to the company line that it will be ready by January 2010, although most observers are predicting a late summer/autumn 2009 launch.

However, Curran believes that Windows 7 has already lifted much of the negativity that surrounded its predecessor. "The positive energy and momentum is quite a bit higher than it was in the Vista timeframe," Curran conceded. "People are excited about Windows 7."

Is anyone really interested in this. I haven't took time to actually test it but I see the whole thing as another Vista. Looks cool with a few new features but still not even worth the update.

Watch the video above for a little info and ow it looks. Personally I will pass on 7 just as I did on vista. Again you need more resources just for the OS again. And there not much reason to get a new OS that specifically has an XP mode in. If 7 is worth it, it wouldn't have to have an XP mode in it.

i got a second computer that has more then the required spec for 7, i am goign to play with it on that computer and see how it works with the software i have.

well I agree with GIR I'm doing the same and trying it out first hand and see if it lives up to the hype and all that, so far I don't have any problems yet but I'll keep messing with it

Well I'm proably the least comp lit person on this site so I will give my opinion.

We have had Vista for so long now but this last weekend Sinny came over and reloaded out computers to XP. Everyone was happy. All our computers were faster and all the programs we have before that was giving us problems no longer did. So from a non-tech person using new windows doesn't help, infact it hurts. And as Nina said, the new software has an xp mode. Even to me hat tells me XP is still the best if they out they're way to still included it on newsoftware.

take it from me, believe everything Nina tells you lol, and Sinny too, Xp is the shit cause I've had Vista too on my PC's and laptop sucks because it sucks up most of the RAM memory, and that's why your programs probably were giving you problems but yeah XP rocks

Well besides the looks there not muh need to upgrade an OS. You have to always look for Vista compatability, but with XP you don't have that problem.

i've HEARD that Win 7 is good.. it has the kernel that was originally intended for Vista... but it (the kernel) was pulled form Vista along with anything else that would have made it decent.

i'm 50/50 still.. xp is still FUNCTIONAL from the start. we all know it. it WORKS. and as Dream stated, Vista is a thorn in the side, always needing the "Vista compatible" stickers.

lets face it, if we're gonna pay for an OS that needs "work arounds" for a lot of software, why not just get a distro of Linux? same shit, but FREE (and more stable, secure and blah blah blah)

oh christ, i've become a Linux fanboy!!! D:

orange added 2 Minutes and 3 Seconds later...:Update:

Linux has alot of work around when it comes to hardware but still better compatability then Vista

yeah it is, well I'm thinking that I'm just gonna stick with XP and tough it out, XP hasn't giving me that many problems as 7 and Vista have
