McCain Supports Warrantless Domestic Surveillance

If elected president, Senator John McCain would reserve the right to run his own warrantless wiretapping program against Americans, based on the theory that the president's wartime powers trump federal criminal statutes and court oversight, according to a statement released by his campaign Monday.

McCain's new tack towards the Bush administration's theory of executive power comes some 10 days after a McCain surrogate stated, incorrectly it seems, that the senator wanted hearings into telecom companies' cooperation with President Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, before he'd support giving those companies retroactive legal immunity.

As first reported by Threat Level, Chuck Fish, a full-time lawyer for the McCain campaign, also said McCain wanted stricter rules on how the nation's telecoms work with U.S. spy agencies, and expected those companies to apologize for any lawbreaking before winning amnesty.

But Monday, McCain adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin, speaking for the campaign, disavowed those statements, and for the first time cast McCain's views on warrantless wiretapping as identical to Bush's.

Not really new or anything. There's so many ways of having surveillance in the US now official suppport for it isn't really necessary at all.

Yup, if McCain gets elected it will be like another term for Bush, well I guess its down to McCain vs Obama, from what I heard on the news Obama doesn't have much time to campaign against McCain but we'll see what happens

McCain was doing great but he just wouldn't shup up. The more he talks lately the more he's appear to be another Bush. At first he was a completely different Republican but not he fell right into the same trend.

McCain has always been more Bush since the get go, he's just been better about hiding it.

If you don't want your country to keep going the way it is (recession, debt, loss of Soldiers lives in war based off lies and more and more layoffs) Obama is the only real option.

yeah well not its a choice between Obama and McCain, but hey one thing that's making wonder is if Obama is going to choose Clinton as a VP, since the news said they met in secret to talk about a possible VP position with Obama's campaign against McCain
