Happy (Belated) Birthday Wolfenstein

While Doom usually gets most of the credit for being the first great first person shooter, 16 years ago yesterday Id Software released Wolfenstein 3D which deserves just as much credit. It technically wasn’t the first FPS either, but thanks to a shareware version the game spread across PCs like wildfire. I also think it helped to foster the concept of the ‘adult’ or ‘mature’ game since it had you running around shooting Nazis and even attack dogs with all manner of machine gunnery. (It was even banned in Germany because of the Nazi themes.) Of course Wolfenstein 3D paved the way for Id to make Doom and Quake which also helped the PC to become the place for first person shooters. (Until Goldeneye on the N64 showed up.)

So Happy Birthday Wolfenstein 3D. And if you’re in the mood for a little nostalgia while at work, I recommend checking out the WolfenFlash 3D flash game which is a pretty close facsimile of Wolfenstein 3D that can be played right in your browser.

goldeneye on the n64 was fuckin AWESOME, its the one game i have to go out and get so me and the buddies can go "old-school" (if you can call it that) deathmatch lol

I love that game and played it so many times and all the added lvls, and when i heard about 5 years ago about teh remake man i was one of the first to get it and i loved it. it is one of my favorite shooters. there is not many that come close to it in my eye.

I still play the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory from time to time, I realize it's not the original game, but it's roots are there.

Does anyone remember the early console versions of Doom and Wolfenstein, I don't think they really got console FPS's right till the Dreamcast (for all that love Golden Eye and any other N64 relatives, I was bored of them quickly) got Quke III, and had KB/Mouse support...

OMFG i love this game my uncle used to play it when i was little.. it brings back memories! when i would go over ther i always wanted to play that game!! i wish i could still play it! i loved it where would i go to download it??? i would sooo love to play that game!! again??

I never did play this game, I saw it everywhere though. Actually I always heard about people playig it but never saw anyone play it.

aaaah but a KB/mouse setup makes it less like a CONSOLE game,a nd more like a PC game (same control type)

the N64 definitely had it right with the analog stick where it was and the "Z-trigger" under it.. the set-up for that was just spot-on

just a shame that when you look back it was actually quite a shit console :\



wish i had got myself a Dreamcast tho.. its the one console i LOVED but missed

That's the point, KB mouse is just a better control scheme for FPS's

I can begin to stress upon this statement enough. It would take an expect playet on the controller to even come close to the skills of a so-so player using KB/mouse.

Generally top Controller players sit int the top 100 of FPS player, but rarely top ten, or even twenty.

That said there was a rumour that one of the console developers for UT3 used to destroy the PC developers in test plays using a 360 controller.

I'll stay with UT. And yeah keyboard and mouse is deifnitely much better to use. Sin had to drill it in me (yes that too ) to use it and yeah its much better.

Also Half-Life is another game I love to play. Sin got it for me and I think I bored him to death all the times I played it. He would go to work and come here and I still be playing it
