PlayStation Phone to Hit Shelves Next Year?

According to Marketing Week, Sony is said to be considering launching a PlayStation-branded phone that would incorporate elements of PSP functionality, possibly as soon as Christmas 2009.

The site claims that Sony would likely develop the new phone itself rather than in collaboration with Swedish mobile company Ericsson, which currently manufactures a number of phone handsets that incorporate Sony’s Walkman and Cyber-Shot brands.

One industry source told MW that the relationship between Sony and Ericsson had become “frosty”, while another suggested that Sony had already made up its mind that it would never allow the Swedish firm to use its PlayStation branding.

In November 2007 Sony shot down rumors that a PlayStation phone was in development after SCE’s co-chief operating officer, Jim Ryan, was “misquoted” as saying that convergence between Sony's PlayStation and Ericsson arms to create a console orientated phone was "definitely plausible".

Although that's alot of over kill. Sin would get it but wouldn't use it much since it would be a windows mobile phone.

He's pretty much set on only having windows mobile phones from now on. It will have to be something great for him o get a phone that doesn't have windows mobile.

a PS phone huh?! hmm well it just looks like the PSP being held to the ear, but yeah I think I would get this phone i mean it could work during those long flights or long drives lol

The picture I'm guessing is a mock up, I'm actually more surprised it's taken this long. It'll be interesting how well the first fully made by sony cellphone functions. Will it be buggy, will it require constant updates, what else besides PSP compatibility will it feature (PDA type apps? Camera?)

there is a adapter where you can make calls using Skype i think its called for the PSP. so really this is not a surprise at all. it might run a mobile of windows. or sony might make its oun mOS and then start a blu ray battle over mOS.

Sony hasn't really captured the whole windows mobile yet. Not counting their last phone which is really made by HTC.

that would be interesting war civil war among the SONY company huh?! well like Raven says they haven't had much luck with windows mobile, besides I doubt that war will ever happen but if it does, then that be really stupid because they are both from SONY

I like sony and definely like playstation so I would more in likely by the phone if the price was right and if it has lots of features. but more in likely it might not be sucessful in saling it
